Kindness is Courage

 Kindness is Courage

My old mentor, now long at rest,
would smile with irony and jest:
“No good deed goes unpunished.”
His counsel was a warning bell,
that kindness, given freely,
would return as sorrow,
as disappointment,
as pain.
Yet I have seen another truth:
that generosity is not frailty,
but the quiet anthem of the brave.
To offer kindness is to walk unarmed
into the realm of betrayal,
to risk deceit,
to face treachery—
often from those who drank deepest
from your well of grace.
And still, the kind endure.
They rise, wounded yet unbroken,
hearts reopening like dawn
after the longest night.
They refuse the armor of bitterness,
they refuse the silence of closed doors.
They give again.
They love again.
They shine again.
True strength is this:
To choose kindness anyway.
To be generous though the world may wound,
To keep the heart unbarred though scarred—
That is courage.
The kind are alchemists of pain:
they heal, they forgive, they give.
Their light cannot be dimmed,
For kindness is not weakness—
It is the purest fire of the soul,
The song of the fearless.
